Humidity levels
As cold weather approaches humidity/moisture levels change. With winter usually comes low humidity levels. Please keep in mind that if humidity levels drop below 35%, it can be a problem for your hardwood. Excessive dryness can cause wood floors to shrink, as a result creating gaps between floor boards, floor splintering, and weakening the wood. What you can do during winter months is check humidity levels with a humidistat or hydrometer (Available in most hardware stores for a low cost), and if the humidity levels are beyond the 35%-55% range, make the necessary adjustment. In this case, as winter months create dry conditions, use a humidifier to boost moisture in your home.
